Was this fight a robbery?

The short answer is No. It was a close fight with many people believe Lomanchenko deserved the win.

Did the right man win?

It depends on who you ask. Even though most of the fighters, boxing fans, think Lomancheko deserved to win, the judge’s decision counts at the end that Haney was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

116 – 112 scorecard was highly controversial. Dave Moretti, the judge who scored 116 – 112, gave round 10 to Haney a round without a doubt, was a dominant Lomanchenko round, explains it all.

There were many close rounds, and American judges gave an American fighter many of the close rounds and the American media supported the Haney win.

Andre Ward can call us boxing fans casuals who thought Lomanchenko won on national TV, but he can’t call all the pro fighters who thought Lomancheko won the fight casuals.

In-Depth Analysis

Stylistic Matchup

Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko fought an epic battle for the Undisputed Lightweight Title

This exciting matchup showcased Haney’s 29 – 0 record against Lomachenko’s tactical prowess. Their contrasting styles made for an unforgettable night.

Haney focused on punches to Loma’s body and worked his jab. On the other hand, Lomachenko relied on his exceptional footwork and crisp combinations. Both fighters had their moments throughout the 12 rounds.

Key Moments in the Fight

As the fight began, Haney became aggressive, targeting Lomachenko’s body. Lomachenko started being aggressive from the early rounds, having learned from his mistake with Teofimo Lopez’s fight, where he took earlier rounds off.

Both fighters tried to find openings throughout the fight, but Lomachenko’s footwork was superior. The battle waged on, with both fighters showcasing their unique skillset.

It seemed The Matrix Lomachenko was collecting all the data whilst being the busier fighter in the earlier, pushing the pace and landing cleaner punches to win the rounds.

As the fight professes we could see Haney’s head snap back countless times with Loma’s powerful left hand. Towards the end of the fight, we could see Loma land his left hand relatively with easily, which reminded me a lot about Manny Pacquiao’s signature left hand.

We could hear Devin tell his dad/trainer in between rounds that Loma has figured out his strategy.

In Round 10 and 11, Lomachenko had dominant rounds, increasing the pressure with well-executed combinations. However, Haney managed to withstand his opponent’s resurgence, keeping his composure and trying his best not to get things out of hand.

Toward the end of round 12, both fighters exchanged heated attacks in the final moments. If Lomachenko dominated round 12 like his previous rounds, there would be a strong case for robbery.

When I heard 116-112 announced, I immediately thought Loma won, but even though 116-112 for Loma is possible, I thought it would be a little closer to 115-113 for Loma…

..And like most boxing experts, I genuinely picked Haney to win this fight because I think Loma is no longer in his prime, older and 135 he has admitted is not his best weight as he is fighting dudes a lot naturally bigger and stronger than him.

Had this fight taken place in Ukraine 116-112 for Loma, that may make sense but there was doubt in my mind when the 116-112 scorecard read out with the fight taking place in Las Vegas with American Judges. Did they give this fight to Haney? No way 116-112 for Haney.

Ultimately, the judges awarded a unanimous decision in Haney’s favor, with scorecards reading 116-112 and 115-113 (twice).

The victory ignited talk of a possible rematch and further solidified Haney’s legacy in the lightweight division. The captivating showdown between these two talented athletes left fans eagerly anticipating their rematch of this close fight.

Shakur Stevenson said in his interview that even though he wants to fight Haney next if he was in Haney’s place, he would fight Lomachenko again and win decisively because he is very competitive.

Devin Haney talked a lot about legacy pre-fight and if he really cares about his legacy, he has to have a rematch with Lomachenko immediately because with already out of prime Loma in a few year’s time, this fight will be very one-sided in favor of Haney.
